Plan to Capture an Asteroid Runs Into Politics –

Not even kidding

If Higgs Boson Calculations Are Right, A Catastrophic ‘Bubble’ Could End Universe

This has to be the worst news all week for Preppers everywhere.

‘The universe wants to be in a different state, so eventually to realize that, a little bubble of what you might think of as an alternate universe will appear somewhere, and it will spread out and destroy us.'”

According to Discovery News, Lykken said if this happens, it’ll happen at light speed, which means if anyone is around to witness it — our solar system will be long gone — they’ll be gone before they realize it.

All this prepping for nothing. The world may end faster than anyone can say, “Quick! Let’s get to the Bug Out Shelter!” and none of us will be around to put all those  jars of canned butter and hoarded cans of soup to real use. Oh, Higgs-Boson, how you make me evaluate the true meaning of life.

In Russia, 400…er ….700? ….a lot of  people were injured when meteorites crashed to earth in what one science guy on the news called  “an exploding fireball event” . The injuries were mostly due to broken glass and fallen debris from damaged buildings. At least three are listed in serious condition.

In this video, you can hear a very loud boom  from the impact of the meteor.

This one, too…and I think I can hear the sonic boom?

According to some shaky news sources, there have been 3 impact sites identified and the Russian space agency Roskosmos has confirmed the object that crashed in the Chelyabinsk region is a meteorite:

“According to preliminary estimates, this space object is of non-technogenic origin and qualifies as a meteorite. It was moving at a low trajectory with a speed of about 30 km/s.”

Science People talking about this say this sort of event is extremely rare but hey…. building a bunker is never a bad idea, just in case.

I think we can all agree that this belongs on the soundtrack.

Tom Waits voice itself can set the tone for an apocalypse, couldn’t it? In this song, his voice is especially evocative.

The images in this video are taken from a 1965 British film “The Earth Dies Screaming”, a sci-fi film about a gas attack that kills most of the population and a few survivors try to survive. I haven’t seen this movie yet but I hear there are aliens and robots and such, so there’s that to look forward to. According to Tom Waits, he was inspired by the title of the film but never actually saw it.

Some lyrics:

There was thunder
There was lightning
Then the stars went out
And the moon fell from the sky
It rained mackerel
It rained trout
And the great day of wrath has come
And here’s mud in your big red eye
The poker’s in the fire
And the locusts take the sky
And the earth died screaming
While I lay dreaming of you

Don’t know who made this but I saw it at jujukitten’s tumblr

A 70-mile-wide asteroid is en route to Earth, and the last best attempt to counter it has failed. Also failing is the marriage of soft-spoken insurance salesman Dodge; the breaking news that the world will end in an estimated 21 days cues his wife to leave him on the spot.

As it so happens, tonight an asteroid the size of a city block will pass by the earth. While this one will miss us, there’s a one chance in 625 that a 460-ft wide asteroid could hit earth in 28 years. February 5,2040, to be semi-exact.
