Tom Waits voice itself can set the tone for an apocalypse, couldn’t it? In this song, his voice is especially evocative.

The images in this video are taken from a 1965 British film “The Earth Dies Screaming”, a sci-fi film about a gas attack that kills most of the population and a few survivors try to survive. I haven’t seen this movie yet but I hear there are aliens and robots and such, so there’s that to look forward to. According to Tom Waits, he was inspired by the title of the film but never actually saw it.

Some lyrics:

There was thunder
There was lightning
Then the stars went out
And the moon fell from the sky
It rained mackerel
It rained trout
And the great day of wrath has come
And here’s mud in your big red eye
The poker’s in the fire
And the locusts take the sky
And the earth died screaming
While I lay dreaming of you
